World Mental Health Day takes place on 10th October
The theme for this year's awareness day is 'Dignity in Mental Health' and looks at what can be done to ensure people with mental health problems can live with dignity.
With this theme, the World Federation for Mental Health aims to show how dignity can be provided in all aspects of mental health.
In terms of mental health disorders, we may think of dignity in treatment and care. Care which encompasses the present stage of an illness but which also has a focus on recovery.
We may also think of prevention and health promotion - relating dignity in mental health with an appreciation that good mental health is a valuable asset, where steps are necessary to reduce the risk of mental ill-health.
Incorporating dignity into an approach to mental health issues is also fundamental to dealing with stigma and discrimination, to ensure that those who need support are not afraid to ask for it.
