Promoting good mental wellbeing

Thirty former pupils from Holyrood Secondary School played a match last month in memory of their friend and former Scottish footballer Paul McGrillen, who died by suicide three years ago.

Breathing Space, Scotland’s national helpline for low mood and depression provided T-shirts and water bottles for the match. Tony McLaren, Breathing Space National Coordinator said: "This was a poignant match for Paul’s friends and family so we appreciate the opportunity to raise awareness of Breathing Space. Keeping Paul’s memory alive and raising awareness is important to those who knew him; football is a great avenue for promoting good mental wellbeing."

Paul spent his early career at Motherwell FC before playing for several other Scottish teams including Falkirk FC. He was playing for junior side Bathgate Thistle when his death was announced in July 2009.
