Conversation on a bench – bereavement by suicide

Ahead of World Suicide Prevention Day on 10 September 2022 we share a powerful story marked by hope and recovery.

Breathing Space met John Gibson at the Take some Breathing Space initiative bench, Space to Grow, Huntlyburn, Melrose on Tuesday 2nd August. John took the time to share his experiences of grief following bereavement by suicide.

John was walking through the Scottish Borders as part of his journey from Lands End to John O’Groats to raise awareness about suicide. In 2019 John’s son Cameron died by suicide. This was a life changing event for John and his family and John found himself struggling to cope, at one point making an attempt on his own life. John has found strength in walking, and has set up The Canmore Trust which is raising funds to support suicide prevention work across Scotland, and in particular support for people bereaved by suicide.
